Keep It Clean (File Quality Matters More Than You Think)

Keep It Clean (File Quality Matters More Than You Think)

Let’s clear something up first… a “high quality image” is not just about how it looks on your screen. It is about how much actual information is in the file.

The more you save, compress, and re-save an image, the more that information quietly disappears.

JPEG is the main culprit here. It is fine to use, we all use it, but it is a lossy format. That means every time you save it, it throws a little bit of data away to keep the file size down. Do it once, no problem. Do it ten times… you are starting to degrade your own work.

If you are editing your images, try to work in a higher quality format while you do it. Keep a master copy. Then export to JPEG once at the end for uploading.

When you do save as JPEG, always choose the highest quality setting. Do not let your software “helpfully” reduce the file size unless you absolutely need it.

Now, phones… most modern phones shoot in JPEG by default, and that is perfectly fine. They are usually very good quality to begin with. The mistake happens afterwards.

Sending images through messaging apps, uploading to social media and then downloading again, emailing back and forth… all of these can compress your image further. By the time you upload it properly, it has already lost quality.

Best practice is simple:

  • Keep the original file from your camera or phone
  • Edit that original, not a copy of a copy
  • Avoid re-saving multiple times
  • Export once, at high quality, when you are ready to upload

If your phone allows it, you can also shoot in higher quality formats such as HEIC or even RAW. These give you more information to work with, especially when editing, but always export a clean, high-quality JPEG at the end for uploading.

Think of it like this… every time you compress an image, you are shaving off tiny bits of detail. You may not notice it straight away, but print will.

Keep it clean, keep it original, and your work will hold up exactly as it should.
